LOCATION MATTERS:
While browsing through Aquabid this morning, I found at least two misclassified goodeids. If this practice continues, it may eventually be the demise of these fishes. Proper identification of species and location data MATTERS. Breeding unconfirmed endangered species, such as goodeids; does harm and is a contradiction to conservation. A good example of the detriment to breeding unconfirmed fish are the two species pictured below. There are three different species that are commonly called Red Tailed Goodeids. It is the location data that distinguishes each species. To register these fish in the CARES program, location data is required. As a past Chair to the CARES program, I receive regular updates on registered species. In the last year, numerous entries have been confirmed hybrids. Breeding unconfirmed fish and producing hybrids muddles the bloodlines. And sadly, I see this practice throughout the hobby. Breeding critically endangered fish is a responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Don’t be another nail in the coffin towards the extinction of these fishes.
